BPNI/IBFAN Asia Report Estimates Carbon Footprints Due to Milk Formula

Climate change due to rising concentrations of greenhouse gases in the environment affects human health in many ways and also acts as a threat multiplier that interacts both directly and indirectly with variables, such as disease, food production, food security, food safety and poverty. Optimal breastfeeding not only provides optimal nutrition, it is an effective public health intervention to enhance child survival, nutrition and development. In spite of the great advantages of breastfeeding, use of milk formula is increasing rapidly, particularly in the Asia-Pacific countries, driven by the weak response of governments to regulate aggressive marketing of commercial baby foods, and the failure of labour market policy and workplaces to address the human rights of women. Industrially produced milk formulas generates Green House Gases, contributing to the ever deteriorating climate conditions.

Given the enormous resource demands on governments and communities to mitigate and ameliorate the effects of climate change on human health, it is curious that so little attention is being given to infant and young child feeding, in particular to reversing the current trends of increased formula feeding and reduced optimal breastfeeding both of which add to the existing climate change burden. This report has attempted to calculate how much Green House Gas (GHG) emissions arise from milk formula sold in selected countries of the Asia-Pacif ic region based on the available sales data.
